EXPERT REVIEW: Ringo Starr went back to work in
the summer of 1989 fronting a tour of rock stars who, like him, had become
golden oldies. Ringo sang hits like "It Don't Come Easy" and
"Photograph," Dr. John sang "Iko Iko," Levon Helm of
the Band sang "The Weight," his bandmate Rick Danko sang
"Raining in My Heart," an old Buddy Holly tune, Billy Preston
sang "Will It Go Round Iin Circles," and Joe Walsh sang the
Eagles' "Life in the Fast Lane." (Less interesting were E Street
Band members Nils Lofgren, who sang a non-hit, and Clarence Clemons, who
did a rap version of "Quarter to Three.") Ringo had always
depended on his friends to support his solo career, but this extended the
concept to one in which he served as a sort of master of ceremonies. The
tour was a success; it guaranteed a night of good and varied music, and it
was fun. As a record, of course, it was redundant, but still fun. — William
Ruhlmann |
(So Shine Silently was a non-hit, was it! No one
allowed a hit outside the US then!! TL)

EXPERT REVIEW: As on his previous All-Starr Band
outing, Ringo Starr performs several of his better known songs, among
them the Beatles chestnuts "Yellow Submarine" and "With a
Little Help from My Friends," and then acts as M.C. as various
bandmembers perform some of their own better-known songs. Returnee Joe
Walsh once again sings an Eagles song he did not sing when it was a hit,
"Desperado," while his bandmate Timothy B. Schmit delivers the
Eagles' "I Can't Tell You Why." The band is top-heavy with
guitarists: Dave Edmunds does "Girl Talk," and Todd Rundgren
brings "Bang on the Drum," while keyboardist Burton Cummings
relives the Guess Who with "American Woman." There are fewer
All-Starrs and more tracks, so many get second chances. But the show,
recorded June 13, 1992, at the Montreux Jazz Festival, is less
impressive than the first one; even Ringo sounds a little less
enthusiastic. — William Ruhlmann |
And the Final Word............Nils obviously enjoyed gigging with such a
prestigious group of musicians and that has little to do with the albums in
themselves. I think both the Nils tracks are fine versions of
excellent songs (thanks Napster for the MP3s) and yet Mr. Ruhlmann, AMG
Expert, is still no doubt critisizing the fact that the Beatles broke up,
Ringo is best narrating Thomas the Tank Engine and The Blue Meanies never
made it as big as Pokemon! Shame on you. TL

| Liner Notes : |
It is rare that a drummer would have such a noteworthy
career - so respected and significant that a highly anticipated box set
would be devoted to his many accomplishments and then released to an eager
and adoring public. But then, Ringo Starr is no ordinary drummer.
He has already gone down in history as the rhythmic
backbone of the world's greatest rock band ever ... past, present ... or
future ! ... But he is particularly pleased with his work in the All Starr
Band. The premise is simple and so wonderfully effective - with Ringo at
it's core, a band is built around him featuring some of the most well-known
and talented musicians from the classic rock era.
They are then turned loose upon soldout venues around the
globe, including dates in Japan, Europe and Russia (Ringo was the first
Beatle to perform in Russia !) where Ringo gleefully leads the band through
not only classic Ringo-sung Beatles and solo hits, but also versions of some
of each members greatest hits.
The supporting cast is rotated every time there is a new
tour to keep things interesting and fresh, and since it's inception in 1989,
Ringo has proudly headlined his All Starr Band concept with five different
aggregations of some very seriously talented players ! |
